China has long maintained influence among armed ethnic groups in Myanmar while supporting military leaders. However, a recent attack on its consulate in Mandalay has strained relations between the two countries. China has demanded an investigation into the incident, which has raised concerns about the stability of the region.

The attack comes at a time when the military junta in Myanmar is facing increasing pressure from rebel groups and ethnic armies. Recent reports suggest that the junta is losing control over large parts of the country, including key strongholds and townships. The fall of Lashio, the capital of the northern Shan State, has left the military vulnerable and exposed to potential attacks on major cities like Mandalay and Naypyidaw.

The rebel groups, known as the “Three Brotherhood Alliance,” have made significant gains in recent months, routing junta forces and targeting cybercrime syndicates operating in the region. China has been working with these groups to combat cybercrime and transfer suspects back to China. However, as the rebel groups gain strength, China has begun pressuring them to halt their advance and broker a cease-fire.

China’s efforts to promote peace and stability in Myanmar have faced challenges, with neighboring countries expressing frustration over the ongoing violence. Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has called on partner nations like China to step up and pressure Myanmar authorities to end the conflict. China, on its part, has increased public engagements with the junta, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasizing the strong friendship between the two countries.

A potential visit by Min Aung Hlaing to China could signify a significant policy shift for China. Meeting with Chinese officials, including President Xi Jinping, would be a crucial move for both countries to mend relations and address the escalating tensions in Myanmar. China’s role in resolving the conflict and promoting peace in the region will be closely watched by the international community.
