Chinese Tourist Arrivals in Thailand Expected to Remain Steady

The Association of Thai Travel Agents (Atta) has forecasted that the number of Chinese tourists visiting Thailand in the upcoming year will likely remain steady, hovering around 7-8 million arrivals. This prediction is based on the ongoing economic challenges faced by China, including potential tariff hikes under the incoming Trump administration.

Sisdivachr Cheewarattanaporn, president of Atta, emphasized the impact of global geopolitical tensions and the Chinese economic landscape on tourism numbers. Despite Thailand’s ambitious target of attracting 9 million Chinese visitors in 2025, Mr. Sisdivachr expressed skepticism about achieving this goal.

As of December 8, Thailand had already welcomed 32.7 million foreign tourists, with China standing out as the largest market with 6.3 million arrivals. However, the daily influx of 15,000-20,000 Chinese tourists is not expected to surpass 6.9-7 million for the entire year, falling short of the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s target of 7.3 million.

### Economic Factors Impacting Chinese Tourism
Several economic factors within China have contributed to the stagnation in outbound tourism. These include domestic tourism promotions, a real estate downturn, weakened consumer spending, and a high youth unemployment rate, all of which have dampened the purchasing power of Chinese travelers.

### Potential Impact of Trump’s Policies
The potential tariff hikes on Chinese imports by the incoming Trump administration could further strain the Chinese economy and subsequently affect consumer behavior. However, if China manages to sustain its economic growth through stimulus measures, there is a possibility of a positive upswing in Thai tourism from the Chinese market.

### Opportunities for Growth
With 2025 marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and China, there is a prime opportunity for the government to actively engage with this market. By targeting new cities with significant tourist potential, Thailand can leverage its appeal as a top outbound destination for Chinese travelers.

As the Thai government explores avenues to enhance tourism cooperation with China, including facilitating charter flights from untapped cities and promoting visits to lesser-known destinations in Thailand, the potential for growth in Chinese tourist arrivals remains promising.
