The Digital Economy and Society (DES) Ministry has recently unveiled the updated generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) governance guidelines aimed at assisting executives and organizations. The guidelines are designed to address the growing use of GenAI across various industries and the associated risks, such as privacy concerns, data security issues, and potential impacts on employees and society, as highlighted by DES Minister Prasert Jantararuangthong.

In his statement, Mr. Prasert emphasized the importance of achieving a balance between leveraging GenAI’s capabilities while effectively managing the associated risks in compliance with relevant laws and regulations. The guidelines offer insights into understanding GenAI, its benefits, limitations, risks, and provide recommendations for its implementation with good governance practices.

As GenAI continues to emerge as a vital tool for organizations in the digital era, having a clear framework and guidelines becomes essential for all stakeholders involved. Organizations are encouraged to develop comprehensive plans and guidelines for overseeing the responsible use of such technology, considering its long-term implications.

The DES Ministry has played a key role in shaping policies and strategies for digital advancement, including the AI governance policy aimed at fostering trust in AI utilization. The National AI Action Plan for Thailand’s Development (2022-2027) outlines the country’s readiness across various dimensions, including societal, ethical, legal, and regulatory aspects for AI deployment, overseen by the Electronic Transactions Development Agency.

A recent survey highlighted a significant increase in AI technology adoption in the country, with 17.8% of respondents indicating current utilization, up from 15.2% in the previous year. Moreover, 73.3% of participants expressed their interest in exploring AI technology applications, a notable rise from 56.6% in the prior year. The survey also revealed a decrease in the number of respondents (8.9%) disinterested in AI adoption, down from 28.2% in the previous survey conducted in 2023.

The growing adoption of AI technology underscores the importance of having robust governance guidelines in place to navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by GenAI effectively. With the right strategies and frameworks, organizations can harness the power of AI technology while mitigating associated risks and ensuring responsible and ethical use across all sectors. The release of the GenAI governance guidelines marks a significant milestone in promoting the responsible adoption of AI technology in Thailand’s digital landscape.
