Visitors Flock to Khao Kheow Open Zoo to See Moo Deng, the Viral Pygmy Hippo Sensation
Fans of Moo Deng, the world’s most famous baby hippo, are flocking to Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chon Buri province to catch a glimpse of the adorable pygmy hippo sensation. The two-month-old female pygmy hippo has taken the internet by storm, with her viral popularity spreading like wildfire across major international media platforms, including Time magazine.
Zoo director Narongwit Chodchoi announced on Saturday that due to the overwhelming crowds eager to see Moo Deng, a new five-minute rule has been implemented to ensure that everyone gets a chance to view the beloved baby hippo. With thousands of visitors descending upon the zoo, the staff has capped groups at 30 to 50 people at a time to manage the influx of excited fans.
Traffic leading to the zoo, located approximately 35 kilometres northeast of Pattaya, was backed up by two hours as eager spectators lined up for the chance to see Moo Deng up close. In response to the overwhelming demand, the zoo has set up a pathway leading to other attractions, such as capybaras, elephants, and penguins, to accommodate those who have already had their five-minute encounter with the viral sensation.
To further cater to Moo Deng’s devoted fanbase, the 2,000-acre facility is gearing up to launch a 24-hour livestream of the adorable pygmy hippo on its Zoodio live streaming channel, set to debut next week. This move harkens back to the era of the TrueVisions Panda Channel, which captured the hearts of viewers more than a decade ago with its round-the-clock coverage of Lin Ping.
In a bid to support conservation efforts and enhance the zoo’s habitats, funds generated from the sale of Moo Deng merchandise will be reinvested into the facility. Mr. Narongwit emphasized the importance of visitors adhering to the rules and refraining from disturbing animals in other enclosures to ensure a harmonious experience for both guests and wildlife.
Time magazine recently paid tribute to Moo Deng, highlighting her endearing antics captured in videos that have resonated with millions of internet users worldwide. Whether she’s playfully frolicking in the water, being doted on by zookeepers, or simply basking in the sun, Moo Deng’s charm has undoubtedly left a lasting impression on all who have crossed paths with her.
Born on June 10 to pygmy hippo parents Jona, 25, and Tony, 24, Moo Deng’s name translates to “bouncy pig” in Thai, reflecting her lively and spirited nature that has captured the hearts of her adoring fans.
With Moo Deng fever showing no signs of abating, the Khao Kheow Open Zoo continues to welcome visitors eager to witness the magic of this pint-sized pygmy hippo in person. As the five-minute rule ensures that everyone gets a chance to see Moo Deng, the zoo remains a hub of excitement and wonder for all who come to marvel at this internet sensation.
