The Sukhothai Governor, Mr. Suchat Tikhakasuk, called for an urgent meeting to address the escalating situation of flooding in the Yom River. The water levels in the Khlong Yom canal have been steadily rising, causing the banks to overflow and flood into nearby villages. The meeting, held at the Sukhothai Provincial Command Center on the 5th floor of the Provincial Hall, was attended by key officials including Deputy Governor Nattapong Sukwisit, Assistant Provincial Police Chief Pol. Col. Chalerm Sricharoen, Provincial Secretary Wisit Benjapitakul, Head of the Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office Pol. Col. Phon Cheuntharn, and Director of the Sukhothai Irrigation Project, Sorapong Srisawangwong.

During the meeting, Governor Suchat briefed the attendees on the current water situation and the potential impact on Sukhothai Province. While the province has implemented comprehensive flood prevention measures in the past, it is crucial to prioritize the safety and well-being of the residents in the event of a real emergency. Preparations such as elevating belongings, developing evacuation plans, and ensuring the provision of essential supplies and medical care in case of injuries are being emphasized.

Proactive Measures to Mitigate the Impact of Flooding

In anticipation of the rising water levels in the Yom River, Sukhothai Province has mobilized its resources to effectively respond to any potential flooding incidents. The province has established a coordinated response plan that includes preemptive measures to protect and assist the local population. This includes deploying personnel from various agencies promptly upon request, reinforcing riverbanks, facilitating evacuations, and ensuring that all units are ready to act 24/7.

Governor Suchat reiterated the importance of all agencies being prepared to handle any flood-related emergencies that may arise. With the increasing water levels in the Yom River, the likelihood of overflow is imminent. Therefore, every unit must be ready to confront the situation and provide assistance to the residents in accordance with the established guidelines.

Impact of Yom River Flooding on Local Communities

The effects of the flooding in the Khlong Yom canal were felt by several villages in the area. In Ban Nong Tak Khe, Moo 5, Khlong Yang Subdistrict, the overflowing canal inundated homes, affecting the roofs of 20 houses. Similarly, in Ban Khlong Wang Thong, Moo 8, Khlong Yang Subdistrict, the canal breach led to water seeping into nine houses, causing flooding. Meanwhile, in Ban Khlong Kae, Moo 7, Nai Mueang Subdistrict, multiple points of the canal were breached, resulting in water entering 20 households.

Efforts to assist and relocate residents to higher ground are underway, with provisions of essential supplies and drinking water being arranged for the affected population. Additionally, medical attention is being provided to those in need, including the evacuation of bedridden patients. One female patient, aged 80, from Moo 7, Nai Mueang Subdistrict, has been transferred to the Sawankhalok Hospital for treatment, while three others are being monitored for any necessary relocation.

The situation remains critical as the water levels continue to rise, posing a significant threat to the communities along the Yom River. The swift response and proactive measures taken by the Sukhothai authorities are crucial in mitigating the impact of the flooding and ensuring the safety of the residents. As the situation evolves, continuous monitoring and preparedness are essential to address any emerging challenges and provide timely assistance to those in need.
