Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has revealed his ambitious “victory plan” to bring an end to the war with Russia by next year. During a session of parliament in Kyiv, Zelensky laid out five key points of his plan, emphasizing the need for urgent support from allies to bolster Ukraine’s position as Russia’s forces continue to advance in the east.
One of the main points of the plan is an unconditional invitation for Ukraine to join NATO, along with a call for weapons support from Western allies. Zelensky also proposed a Western role in developing Ukraine’s natural resources and suggested that Ukrainian troops could enhance NATO’s security and replace some US forces in Europe.
The President stressed the importance of changing the circumstances to force Russia to negotiate for peace, regardless of Putin’s desires. He acknowledged that some allies may have different views on how the war should end but emphasized the need for honest diplomacy.
Zelensky’s plan includes establishing a strategic deterrence package to protect against Russian threats and destroy its military power. Additionally, he mentioned a secret addendum that could not be disclosed. The plan also involves Western investment in Ukraine’s natural resources and post-war reconstruction efforts.
The success of the plan relies on the political will of Ukraine’s key allies, who have provided significant support to the country. However, there are concerns about escalating the conflict with a nation possessing a vast nuclear arsenal. NATO has indicated that Ukraine is on track for membership but has not extended a formal invitation.
The Kremlin responded cautiously to Zelensky’s plan, urging Kyiv to rethink its policies. Russia’s war efforts have been reinforced by arms and personnel transfers from North Korea and Iran, according to Zelensky.
Despite facing challenges in the conflict with Russia, Zelensky remains optimistic about ending the war by next year. He has sought support from Western leaders and plans to present his strategy at a summit of EU leaders in Brussels. The President highlighted the importance of unity among Ukrainians to overcome the challenges of war.
While some lawmakers criticized the plan as unrealistic, Zelensky’s speech aimed to rally the public and emphasize the achievable results that unity can bring in the face of adversity. As the situation in Ukraine remains precarious, the President’s determination to end the war serves as a beacon of hope for the nation.
