The Department of Employment in Thailand has decided to send 800 workers to Israel this month despite the ongoing conflict in the region. The decision comes as many Thais are still interested in working in Israel, according to DoE chief Somchai Morakotsriwan. He emphasized that the workers will only be deployed in safe areas, and they will not be sent to conflict zones in northern Israel.
Mr. Somchai also mentioned that if the conflict escalates further, the government has a plan in place to evacuate the workers to safety. Representatives from the Labour Ministry have already reached out to officials from the Israel Embassy in Bangkok to discuss the issue and ensure the safety of the workers.
During a recent recruitment drive at Chiang Rai Rajabhat University, thousands of prospective workers attended to sit for a skills test, showing the high demand for jobs in Israel. Israeli companies are looking to fill around 2,000 positions, particularly in the construction sector, with a focus on carpenters, ironsmiths, bricklayers, and tilers. Male applicants aged 25-45 are in high demand.
It is estimated that an additional 3,000-4,000 workers will be needed in Israel’s construction sector by the end of the year, with the demand expected to rise to 10,000 next year. Last year, 2,174 locals from Chiang Rai went to Israel for various jobs, but unfortunately, some faced tragic incidents, including casualties and hostages.
In response to these incidents, the Labour Ministry is in talks with Israeli authorities regarding repatriation and compensation under Israeli labor laws. The DoE will also collaborate with the Overseas Employment Fund unit to provide financial aid to the victims’ families promptly. They are expected to receive 40,000 baht for funeral expenses and an additional 40,000 baht for their descendants.
Despite the risks involved, many Thai workers are still eager to work in Israel due to the employment opportunities available. The government is taking measures to ensure the safety and well-being of these workers, including plans for evacuation in case of further escalation in the conflict. By addressing these challenges and providing support to affected families, the authorities are working to safeguard the interests of Thai workers in Israel.
