The Meteorological Department has issued a severe weather alert for several provinces in the Southern region of Thailand. Residents of Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat have been warned to prepare for heavy rain until November 30th.
The main concern is the potential for flash floods, landslides, and water surges along rivers and waterways, especially for those living in low-lying areas and mountainous regions. In Narathiwat, authorities are keeping a close eye on the water levels in various districts due to the ongoing heavy rainfall.
To combat the potential risks, water pumps are on standby to clear excess water, and sandbags have been distributed to protect vulnerable areas from flooding. Local authorities have also set up evacuation shelters and have rescue equipment ready for deployment if needed.
In addition to local efforts, the National Water Resources Office has directed relevant agencies to release water from key reservoirs such as the Bang Lang Dam in Yala. This proactive measure aims to create more storage capacity in anticipation of the forecasted rainfall.
