Deadly Flooding in Southern Region Claims 25 Lives and Affects Over 660,000 Households
In a devastating turn of events, severe flooding in the Southern region of Thailand has resulted in the loss of 25 lives and impacted more than 660,000 households across 10 provinces. The situation remains dire as large areas of six provinces continue to be inundated with water draining off slowly.
Widespread Impact of the Flooding
Phatsakorn Bunyalak, the director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), revealed that from November 23 to December 3, heavy rainfall triggered flooding in Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Trang, Satun, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. A total of 3,729 communities across 87 districts were affected, leading to 664,173 households feeling the brunt of the disaster.
Tragically, 25 individuals have lost their lives as a result of the flooding, marking a significant loss for the affected communities. The aftermath of this natural disaster has left many families grieving and grappling with the destruction caused by the rising waters.
Persisting Challenges in Severely Flooded Provinces
Despite ongoing relief efforts, six provinces are still grappling with severe flooding. Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat are among the hardest-hit areas, with multiple districts in each province struggling to cope with the aftermath of the disaster.
The Interior Ministry is taking steps to address the crisis by proposing an initial budget of 5 billion baht for flood-affected residents in the South. This financial assistance aims to provide relief and support to those who have been most severely impacted by the flooding, offering a glimmer of hope in the face of overwhelming challenges.
Ensuring Support and Recovery for Affected Communities
As the Southern region grapples with the aftermath of this catastrophic flooding, the resilience and unity of the affected communities shine through. In times of crisis, it is crucial for individuals, organizations, and government agencies to come together to provide support, relief, and resources to those in need.
While the road to recovery may be long and challenging, the spirit of resilience and solidarity will guide the Southern region through these trying times. By standing together and offering a helping hand to our neighbors in need, we can overcome even the most formidable challenges and rebuild stronger, more resilient communities for the future.
