A chemical leak led to the evacuation of hundreds of people in Prachin Buri’s Sri Maha Pho district after an explosion at the HSMT New Material Technology (Thailand) Co factory. Nearly 200 locals, including the elderly, were relocated to a community centre in tambon Tha Toom for safety. Firefighters quickly responded to disperse the fumes and bring the situation under control.

District chief Juthamas Bua-Phuean ordered the evacuation and arranged for medical teams to assess the health of the evacuees. Of the 183 people evacuated, most showed no symptoms, while some reported minor throat and nasal irritation. Those with pre-existing health conditions required closer monitoring for more severe symptoms. Thankfully, the situation has returned to normal, and the evacuees have been able to return home.

Locals described hearing a loud explosion, smelling strong odors, and experiencing symptoms like throat irritation and difficulty breathing. The factory reported that the explosion resulted from a malfunction in a chemical tank used for surfactant production.

Authorities, including Prachin Buri’s industry office and the Tha Toom TAO, have temporarily halted the factory’s operations to investigate further.

In the event of a chemical leak, it is crucial to have safety measures and response plans in place. Regular safety drills, employee training, and adequate safety equipment can help prevent accidents and minimize the impact of leaks. Additionally, clear communication channels between authorities, emergency services, and the public are essential for a prompt and coordinated response.

Chemical leaks can have serious health implications, especially for vulnerable populations. It is important to prioritize the safety and well-being of those affected by such incidents. Collaboration between government agencies, healthcare providers, and local communities is key to effectively managing and mitigating the consequences of chemical leaks.
