Thong Lor Police: A Public Apology Through Squats
In a display of accountability and responsibility, Thong Lor police officers in Bangkok took a unique approach to atoning for the actions of a drunk colleague. The incident unfolded at 2:55 am on Sunday when police received a call regarding an armed, intoxicated man who had fired a shot into the air during an argument with a bar security guard in front of a building at soi Ekkamai 5-Thong Lor 10.
A Show of Responsibility
Upon arriving at the scene, authorities identified the man as Pol Sgt Maj Montri Meedetch from the Thong Lor police station. A subsequent blood alcohol test revealed an alarming reading of 136 milligrammes. In light of this incident, station chief Pol Col Pansa Amarapitak took swift action by convening a meeting with all 140 officers under his command to stress the importance of responsible firearm use.
Accountability Through Action
During the meeting, Pol Col Pansa led by example and joined his fellow officers in performing 10 squats in unison, with their arms across each other’s shoulders. This physical display served as both a form of self-discipline and a public apology for the misconduct of their intoxicated comrade. The collective punishment was a symbolic gesture of solidarity and accountability within the police force.
Consequences for Misconduct
In the aftermath of the incident, Pol Sgt Maj Montri faced severe repercussions for his actions. He was promptly discharged from duty on Monday and now confronts charges related to possessing and carrying a firearm in public without authorization, discharging a weapon in a public space, as well as assaulting and causing fear among others. The Thong Lor police station’s response underscores the commitment to upholding the law and ensuring public safety while holding their own members accountable for misconduct.
