Energy giant Bangchak Corporation Plc has joined forces with Charoen Pokphand Foods Plc (CPF) to enhance their sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production efforts. By signing a cooperation agreement, the two companies will work together to manage used cooking oil and various fats from CPF’s food production facilities to produce SAF through Bangchak’s subsidiary BSGF.
SAF is a biofuel for aircraft that can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional jet fuel. This partnership marks a significant step towards promoting sustainability and positive change in the aviation industry, according to Chaiwat Kovavisarach, the CEO of Bangchak.
By utilizing used cooking oil and fats as raw materials for SAF production, the collaboration supports the government’s circular economic development initiatives. This process involves upcycling unwanted materials to create value and reduce environmental impact.
Bangchak’s “Fry to Fly” campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of proper disposal of used cooking oil to prevent pollution and health risks associated with its reuse. With over 800 public and private sector locations participating in supplying used cooking oil for SAF production, the initiative is gaining momentum nationwide.
Currently, Thailand consumes 1 million liters of oil daily, with a significant portion leftover from frying activities. Repurposing this waste oil for SAF production not only reduces environmental harm but also supports sustainable aviation practices.
Bangchak’s upcoming SAF factory in Bangkok, set to begin operations in 2025, will have a production capacity of 1 million liters per day. This output is expected to meet aircraft fuel demands until 2030, aligning with EU regulations that require a percentage of SAF in jet fuel for flights to Europe.
CPF’s CEO, Prasit Boondoungprasert, emphasized that this collaboration reflects CPF’s commitment to sustainable innovation in food production. There is potential to expand this initiative to CPF’s international operations in the future, further driving sustainable practices across the company.
The strategic partnership between Bangchak and CPF signifies a proactive approach towards environmental sustainability and renewable energy in the aviation sector. By leveraging used cooking oil and fats to produce SAF, the companies are contributing to a greener future for air travel and reducing carbon emissions in the industry.
