The world’s first continual cruise, the Villa Vie Residences’ Odyssey, is finally ready to set sail after a delay caused by unexpected repair works. Passengers who have been eagerly awaiting the start of their three-and-a-half-year world voyage will finally embark from Belfast on Monday.
The Odyssey offers a unique experience for travelers, allowing them to either purchase cabins for the entire operational life of the ship or rent them to travel segments of the journey. With a capacity for 650 passengers, the ship was initially scheduled to depart from Belfast in May but was delayed due to issues with its rudders and gearbox.
After undergoing a series of sea trials, the Odyssey has now received approval from Britain’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and Public Health, paving the way for passengers to board the vessel. Despite the prolonged delay, many passengers have remained optimistic about the cruise experience.
John Frim, a passenger from Canada, shared his thoughts on the delay, stating, “It has just been dragging on for a long time, but we’ve never lost faith in the concept.” His wife Monica added, “We’re not happy about the delay… but when you think in a period of three-and-a-half years, what’s four months?”
To compensate for the unexpected delay, the cruise company covered guests’ accommodation costs in Belfast and other parts of Europe. The inaugural voyage will span 1,301 days, visiting all seven continents and making stops at 425 ports around the world, from Rio de Janeiro to Singapore.
The Odyssey is equipped with various amenities, including restaurants, a pool, spa, business center, and medical facilities, ensuring that passengers have a comfortable and enjoyable journey. Despite the challenges faced during the repair works, passengers have tried to make the most of their time in Belfast.
Retired American wealth manager Holly Hennessy expressed her fondness for the city, saying, “I will always have a fond place in my heart for Belfast. Meeting so many different kind people, living in an urban environment, being carless, and being away from American politics has been wonderful.”
For some passengers, the Odyssey has become more than just a cruise – it has become their new home. Melody and John Hennessee from the United States have decided to make the ship their permanent residence. The couple shared their excitement about this new chapter in their lives with the BBC.
In a heartwarming twist of fate, Canadian Gian Perroni and American Angela Harsanyi found love during their time in Belfast while waiting for the repairs to be completed. The couple recently announced their engagement and are planning to tie the knot between the Panama Canal and Costa Rica.
As the Odyssey prepares to embark on its world voyage, passengers are looking forward to the adventures and experiences that await them. From exploring new destinations to forming lasting relationships, the journey promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for all on board.
